When size large is just right. introductionthe chevrolet tahoe is america's best-selling full-size suv. One of the reasons is that it seems to be exactly the right size suv for a lot of americans. It's big enough to haul busloads of people and boatloads of cargo, yet it's more manageable than the super-size suburban. tahoe carries more cargo than a compact or mid-size suv such as the chevy trailblazer or ford explorer. It can carry five passengers and their gear at the same time. Third-row seats are available to increase the capacity to seven passengers, or up to nine when equipped with bench seats throughout. The tahoe makes for a stable towing platform and pulling a trailer is no problem with the optional 5. 3-liter v8. Yet the tahoe is far more maneuverable than a suburban, important in crowded parking lots, underground garages, or when parallel parking, and it will fit into more garages. on the road, the tahoe is smooth and stable, a rock. It has plenty of power and its brakes work well. The cabin is comfortable and familiar, friendly and functional, particularly after improvements that were made for 2003. Turn off the highway and the tahoe handles gravel, rugged two-tracks, mud, and snow. The tilt steering could use finer adjustments, but by adjusting the height and tilt of the seat it's possible for drivers of all sizes to find a comfortable position. Steering wheel-mounted controls add convenience and enable the driver to personalize functions. we love the lt's electronically controlled, automatic three-zone hvac system for its sophistication and ease of use. Change the driver's temperature, for example, and a panel displays the new temperature for a few moments, then display's the passenger's temperature, then displays the driver's temperature again. It's easy to operate the controls with the big knobs and a clear led display that's easy to understand. Rear electronic temperature controls improve comfort for second- and third-row passengers and pets. the standard setup is a manual-control hvac system with three zones that allows temperature differentials of 30 degrees between driver and passenger. The heating and air conditioning systems themselves have been improved for faster warm-ups and cool-downs. Brakes have been upgraded for improved performance and pedal feel. Turn those features off, turn them on, or deploy them partially. Everything is programmable. New bose stereos, xm satellite radio, panasonic dvd video, wireless headphones, independent controls, and auxiliary inputs galore should ensure everyone is happy for crying out loud. New air bag systems offer improved safety. An all-new electrical architecture eliminates thick bundles of wires and hundreds of connections for improved reliability and easier repair. Engine improvements result in quicker throttle response, better reliability and lower emissions levels. yukon xl remains an excellent choice for families who need three rows of seats on a regular basis. It can haul six to nine people and/or a boatload of cargo. That's right, 8. 1-liters. based on gm's excellent full-size truck platform, gmc yukon xl and chevrolet suburban have much in common, but there are some key differences that go well beyond styling. While yukon can carry a lot of people or haul a lot of cargo, yukon xl can do both at the same time. Denali comes with a 320-horsepower 6. 0-liter vortec v8. Yukon xl 2500 models offer a choice of the 6. 0-liter v8 or 8. 1-liter big-block v8. It has a 2wd mode that was revised for 2003 for more fuel-efficient operation. Shift into 4wd and it locks the front and rear axle speeds together. However, pressing a button switches the system to an auto 4wd mode that automatically shifts torque between the front and rear wheels as conditions demand, good for wet pavement, gravel roads, or inconsistent conditions. Oddly shaped lower body cladding incorporates front and rear stone guards and blends nicely into the denali's color-keyed running boards. opting for quadrasteer does not improve the appearance of the yukon xl as ungainly fender flares are added to the rear to accommodate the significantly wider track (by five inches). . interiorthe gmc yukon xl and chevrolet suburban are leaders when it comes to seating and cargo capacity. Yukon xl comes standard with nice custom cloth upholstery. Cushy, multi-adjustable and swathed in ultrasoft leather, we had trouble getting comfortable in them. The seat bottoms lacked support and didn't seem long enough. The bucket seats are separated by a deep center console that holds lots of stuff. The top of the lid features a nice rubber-lined indention handy for sunglasses and other items. It would be even better if the rubber was an insert that could be removed for cleaning. It would be better still if the top of the console wasn't angled forward: lay a clipboard there and it'll slide off. interior ergonomics are otherwise excellent. Cup holders are superb, an important feature for people who live and work in these things. A well-designed pair of map lights is mounted above and can be aimed. A covered power outlet is conveniently located for cell phones and radar detectors, in addition to the cigar lighter inside the ashtray compartment. The driver information center is redesigned for 2003, now located immediately in front, below the speedometer. It's very handy and easy to use, allowing the driver to program automatic locking and other features, as well as providing trip mileage, fuel economy and other data. new audio and climate controls are more sophisticated, yet easier to operate than last year's (2002) models. All yukon xl models come with a high level of standard equipment. New audio controls on the steering wheel make it easy to switch among station presets and modes, among other things. Digital three-zone climate controls permit separate adjustments for driver, passenger, and the rear. The rear heating/air conditioning controls are mounted overhead, good for people as well as pets. buttons for homelink, which can open garage doors and gates and turn on house lights, and the onstar telematics system are nicely integrated. Gm's onstar security and information service works well as a navigation system because there's nothing to program. Press the button and a human operator comes on to provide directions and other assistance. Press the emergency button and they'll send out the troops. They recline and seemed more supportive and more comfortable than the front seats. Toyota gathered extensive consumer and owner body feedback before redesigning it. this third-generation avalon is more distinctive than before, with apparent grace and agility. It is significantly larger, with special attention paid to rear-seat passenger comfort. Anti-lock brakes (abs) are standard and include electronic brake-force distribution (ebd) and brake assist. Yet, with just a few well-defined design strokes, the new avalon manages to project more character, more contemporary energy than ever before. a good part of this new image comes from a wider, longer stance. Side by side with the 2004 model, the all-new 2005 avalon appears sleek, powerful, and advanced. interiorthe avalon interior is remarkably clean and uncluttered. Retracting lids hide audio controls and the navigation system controls, so the dash and console design avoids a sense of undue complexity. The action of the retracting covers is slow and measured, with the look and satisfying feel of high-end audio equipment. The result is a dash and front compartment that is simple and sophisticated at the same time. rear legroom is particularly generous with three-across seating facilitated by elimination of the rear hump. At one point we rode in the rear seat, directly behind a six-foot driver, with legroom to spare. In fact, enough room that we could imagine the avalon as a taxi cab. part of the rear-seat comfort is due to the fact that the seats offer 10 degrees of adjustment to create five sitting positions. As the backrest is reclined, headroom is increased, so people of varying heights and sizes can be comfortable in the back. the trunk is family sized as well, with a pass-through door for long gear such as skis. Wood accents, particularly on the limited, are attractive and judiciously placed. They provide an apt analogy for the entire car, a vehicle possessed of small comforts that add up to a satisfying environment to calm the pickiest driver. another example: the smart key on the limited. To use it, we just walked up to the car. Foot on the brake, we touched the start button and the car hummed, more like a computer than an automobile. There is no key, no fumbling, only a perfectly convenient entry. like the rest of the car, the suspension is set up primarily for comfort. On tight roads some body roll can be induced. Yet the avalon held any reasonable line through a corner we cared to strike, protesting only at careless tossing, absorbing pavement irregularities at the apex with little apparent concern. It's a front-wheel-drive configuration, with struts controlling l-shaped lower control arms, and a multi-link/strut arrangement in the back, so the car tends to squat slightly coming out of corners, and pull through them from the front. It has quicker reflexes, at the expense of some ride comfort and noise control, but does supply a very secure, on-center feeling through the twisties. Steering, in both cases power rack-and-pinion, manages to avoid the over-assisted vagaries common to large suvs and domestic family sedans. the engine and transmission provide unobtrusive performance. Fifth gear is a very relaxed overdrive, allowing the engine to maintain cruise with minimal effort. As we mixed with commuters and lunch-break traffic, the car remained understressed, quietly relaxed, and undemanding. later in the day, we addressed a steep mountain pass with some determination and were rewarded with 280 horsepower backed by a five-speed automatic that knows when to shift. New flagship delivers elegance, ride, handling. introductionbuick is overhauling its lineup and the lucerne is the second new car, following last year's introduction of the lacrosse. In keeping with tradition, the 2006 buick lucerne is positioned as an affordable entry-level full-size luxury car. The lucerne replaces the lesabre and the park avenue, which are no longer being made. buick says the v6 models compete with the toyota avalon and lexus es 330, and likes to compare the v8 models with the infiniti m and lexus gs, which cost much more than the top of the line lucerne cxs. In any case, we found the new lucerne to be a plush, highly competent full-size sedan at a compelling price. buick's new flagship sedan boasts clean lines suggestive of fine german sedans, while maintaining buick traditions. Inside, it's elegant and comfortable and easy. Underway, the lucerne is smooth and quiet, but its steering is precise and it handles winding roads with aplomb. These are benefits of a new chassis and structure the lucerne shares with the all-new 2006 cadillac dts. The dts and lucerne represent gm's new, full-size, front-wheel-drive luxury sedans. the most enjoyable of the new buicks is the lucerne cxs with its magnetic ride control, a sports suspension developed for the corvette and cadillac xlr that further improves handling. Yet we might opt for the lucerne cxl v6, a very enjoyable car to drive, with agile handling and plenty of performance. lineupthe 2006 buick lucerne is offered in three trim levels. The cxs also features a nine-speaker, 280-watt harman kardon audio system with xm satellite radio. options for the lucerne include heated/cooled front seats; factory-installed remote start; ultrasonic rear parking assist; rain-sensing windshield wiper system; the first heated windshield washer fluid application in its class; six-disc in-dash cd changer with mp3 capability; and a dvd-based navigation system. walkaroundthere is no mistaking the lucerne for anything other than a buick. The lucerne has a handsome appearance with a good stance thanks to its long wheelbase and wide track. The classic buick waterfall grill blends in well with the large integrated headlamps. The side profile, with its steeply raked windshield, is reminiscent of several recently introduced european sedans such as the vw passat and audi a6. The rear of the lucerne features a high trunk line with nicely integrated tail lamps. chrome trim is kept to a minimum. The only stylistic link to buicks of old are the small portholes on each side of the front fenders. That means the lucerne benefits from the newest techniques for building a quiet luxury car. these include hydroformed frame rails for a stiffer body and use of laminated steel with plenty of sound deadening material placed in strategic locations. Buick engineers shaped the outside of the door mirrors to lessen wind noise. Laboratory test results show that the lucerne is quieter than a lexus es 330 and this was evident in a back-to-back driving comparison. much like the exterior, the lucerne's interior is cleanly designed with just enough touches of wood and chrome trim to make it luxurious without being too opulent. The dashboard is fairly traditional in design with a smallish instrument pod containing three round gauges in front of the steering wheel. the center stack with large knobs for operating the climate control and audio system is located high up for easy access. six airbags provide plenty of protection in a crash. Along with the cadillac dts, the lucerne gets the first ever application of a dual-depth passenger airbag. It has two sections; a smaller section deploys in a less severe crash or if the passenger is small or seated nearer the dashboard. In a bad crash or if the passenger is not wearing their seat belt the full bag deploys for maximum effect. for those who need seating for six, buick continues to offer a traditional front bench seat in all but the performance cxs model. Most people opt for front bucket seats, which provide a good level of comfort and have an armrest in the center console. rear-seat passengers are well taken care of with good headroom and excellent leg room. The lucerne handled with aplomb, exhibiting no wallowing or causing any untoward moments. A rigid chassis is the key to balance sharp handling with a smooth ride, and the new lucerne really delivers. the lucerne's ride is excellent, thanks to the long wheelbase and stiff body structure. In back-to-back driving along a stretch of less than perfect road, we found the lucerne's ride quality comparable to that of the benchmark 2006 toyota avalon. Buick loyalists who are used to a cushy ride will not complain about the lucerne. It might be stiffer than they are used to but it's still plenty smooth enough. And the steering is precise and responsive. the cxs features gm's magnetic ride control, a sports suspension designed to enhance overall ride performance. Magnetic ride control uses magnetically charged particles suspended in a synthetic fluid to continuously adjust the fluid's viscosity to varying road surfaces and driving characteristics. The system, which first appeared on the sporty cadillac xlr and then the corvette, delivers a quicker response than conventional valve-damping systems. We tried a cxs with the system and found it did handle better but not significantly. indeed, when we tried a cxl v6 we were pleasantly surprised at just how well it performed. With the lighter v6, the cxl seemed more agile on twisty roads and the front end felt a bit lighter. The v6 models also suffer less from torque steer, a slight tugging felt through the steering wheel when turning and accelerating at the same time. so which model? We were pleased with its performance. However, gm's excellent stabilitrak electronic stability control system is available with the v8 models, which improves driving control by reducing the chance of skidding.
